Hurricane Melissa Intensifies As It Barrels Towards the Island Nation
Cyclone the storm is forecast to escalate to a uncommon Category 5 storm as it turns towards Jamaica, delivering deadly rapid inundation and landslides.
This weather system, which registered winds of up to 120 miles per hour as of 0600 Greenwich Mean Time, is currently turning north-west in the Caribbean and is expected to reach land by Tuesday, as reported by hurricane specialists.
Warnings of power cuts and structural damage have been issued as Melissa generates up to 30 inches of precipitation and storm surges as high as 13ft above normal levels. "Take cover without delay," locals have been urged.
The cyclone is the 13th named storm in this year's Atlantic hurricane season, which normally finishes in late autumn.
Most Intense Hurricane Danger
A Category 5 hurricane is the most intense classification, with wind speeds of at least 157 miles per hour.
While Melissa is expected to weaken to a fourth-level cyclone before making landfall on the island, authorities said there was "very little practical difference in the total effects" upon landfall, and that the storm will be "equally strong" when it hits the island.

With storm-force wind and rainfall predicted to begin long before it passes over the island's interior - perhaps encompassing the capital, Kingston - alerts emphasize that "preparations should be rushed to completion".
"An extended timeframe of damaging winds and torrential rain have begun and will cause devastating and dangerous flash flooding and multiple mudslides," advised meteorological officials.
Jamaican Prime Minister the official said: "I understand that there are many Jamaicans who are worried, who are very concerned, and appropriately: worry is natural.
"Yet the best way to address worry and any apprehension and concern is to stay ready."
Inhabitants are being told to protect their properties with sandbags and wooden boards, and to gather essentials.
Broader Consequences
Advisories are also active for regions of Haiti encompassing the main city, Port au Prince, the Dominican Republic and the eastern part of Cuba, where this storm is expected to bring analogous consequences by the middle of next week.
Landslides already being caused by the storm have caused two deaths in the country, according to emergency services.

The hurricane is projected to pass over the island nation by the middle of the week before passing across the Greater Antilles and emerging into the Atlantic Ocean.
By the moment it makes contact with Cuba, it is predicted to have reduced to a category three cyclone.
